ChiroStrength Corrective Exercise in Nashville, TN

The use of corrective exercises with patients accomplishes two things. First, patients are empowered with knowledge and a game plan to know they have some control of their health. Second, when performed as prescribed, it allows Dr. Dunaway to progress that patient much quicker, which means less time and money spent under direct care. As patients transition out of care, these corrective exercises and stretches can become a staple in the movement diet they develop in order to maintain the corrections made in the clinic. Most corrective exercises can be progressed or regressed for every patient, regardless of age, condition, or how much pain they’re in. This is critical, as it ensures every patient starts at their current level of movement capacity and progresses safely into more and more activity.

Movement capacity describes how much and how well you move, not just how flexible you are, but how much controlled flexibility you have. As children, each of us had the capacity to move our shoulders, hips, ankles, back, and every other joint through a wide range of motion with minimal effort. As we get older we lose some of that capacity, and our risk of injury increases in those areas of decreased mobility. It’s safe to say the average adult can’t reach their foot to their face like a baby does effortlessly. Corrective exercises increase your capacity, decrease your risk of injury, and make your day to day movement more efficient. Or as Dr. Dunaway likes to say, it’ll allow you to age backwards.

Corrective exercises are performed for 10 to 20 minutes on the gym floor after your treatment, using a combination of body weight, resistance bands, and kettlebells. Modified versions of your routine are then taken home and performed daily as homework, so the corrections made in the clinic actually stick.
